EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT - OWEN SHEEHY, CUSTOMER SUPPORT SPECIALIST, MALMÖ 🇸🇪
Meet Owen, originally from Cork, now based in Malmö after making the move to Sweden for love. 🇸🇪
If there’s a new restaurant, bar, or club worth knowing about, chances are Owen has already been, or at least has it pinned on Google Maps. He’s always on the lookout for great food and nightlife, whether he’s traveling or just exploring his own city. 🪩
At home, that curiosity turns into cooking and cocktail-making. And when Malmö city life starts to feel a bit too busy, he heads outdoors: hiking, exploring, and taking full advantage of the nature, water, and allemansrätten right on his doorstep. 🌻 🌊
Owen, if you could instantly become an exert in anything, what would it be?
I would love to be fluent in every language, that would be fantastic! But as a ‘love refugee,’ I would also settle for just Swedish. 😅
It’s been a work in progress for a long time. Even though I have great support from my partner and Swedish friends, it’s been quite hard to really reach a conversational level. I don’t want conversations to switch to English just for me anymore, so yeah, if I could instantly become fluent in Swedish, that would be awesome.
What skills would you say are important to be successful in your role?
Younium is quite an advanced platform and handles a lot of complex customer data. So one of the most important skills as a Customer Support Specialist is the ability to translate complexity and that goes both ways.
First, you need to understand the actual customer’s problem, which often means reading between the lines. Then, you also need to translate the solution in a way that is clear to the customer. You have to minimize the costumer’s uncertainty making them feel confident in the solution. 💡💬
To do that well, you need to be organized, diligent, and knowledgeable about the platform but also empathetic and a strong communicator. And just as importantly, you need to be willing to keep learning and growing in your role.
Do you have a secret talent?
This is a tricky one, at first, I couldn’t think of anything but then I realized I’ve worked in quite a few bars, so I’m actually really good at making cocktails. I make them at home all the time. 🍸
What is your favorite cocktail?
A Margarita, for sure or a Cosmopolitan or a White Lady. Basically, anything lime-based.
What does your ideal vacation look like?
I love visiting big European cities like Barcelona or Prague and exploring the food culture and nightlife. I’m not someone who tries to check off all the sights – I prefer to go with the flow. For me, it’s about soaking up the buzzing atmosphere of a place with equal parts exploring, eating, and enjoying the nightlife.
Why did you choose to work at Younium?
During the interview process, I spoke with Jacqueline, Matilda, and Henrik. They all emphasized Younium’s culture of trust and autonomy and the collaborative atmosphere, teamwork, and a flat hierarchy. That really resonated with me.
At the time of course, I didn’t know if that was really true, but after two years with Younium, I can confidently say that Younium delivered on its promise!
