EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT - MARC JULLINGS, FINANCIAL ACCOUNTANT, STOCKHOLM 🇸🇪
Meet Marc! He’s half English, a quarter Finnish, a quarter Swedish and 100% Stockholmer. Born and raised in the south of Stockholm, that’s what he calls home, and it’s where he still lives today. He spent most of his childhood summers in England and did try life abroad, spending six months each in Lisbon and Belgium, but in the end, nothing could compete with Stockholm. 🇸🇪
Marc is a man of many facets. There’s his analytical side, which you’ll see in action as he works brilliantly with numbers at Younium 📊 His sporty side takes him to the football pitch three times a week ⚽️ His creative side comes alive in the vintage clothing business he runs together with his sister 👕 His entrepreneurial side shows in the accounting firm he runs with his business partner 💼 And then there’s his social side: with family and friends living close by, he spends as much time with them as he can 💛
Marc, what’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?
People are usually surprised when I tell them that I run a vintage clothing business called Jullings Collective on the side. It sounds more entrepreneurial than it is, since it’s more of a hobby business right now, but I enjoy it massively. I’ve been doing it since 2021.
I run it together with my sister, who works in design. She remakes and designs her own pieces, so the business is a basis for her to experiment with design. As for me, I’ve always loved vintage clothing, so I thought, why not try to make a business out of it? Right now we have a website, sell at markets around Stockholm and have done a few pop-ups.
It’s also something that brings my sister and me together. And working in finance isn’t always super creative, so this is my creative outlet.
What advice would you give to someone starting in your role?
Now more than ever: be curious and be open. Finance and economics is one of the areas changing the most with AI, so you need to be willing to adapt from day one.
Try to learn from people who have more experience than you, as early as possible and as much as possible. Realize that you don’t know everything, and try to learn something every day. That mindset has really helped me.
And try different industries. I’ve worked in real estate, tech and SaaS, and retail. Some people might think that finance is the same everywhere, but it really isn’t. It differs a lot depending on the company and the people around you.
Of course, you also need an environment that allows you to try and fail, and I’ve been lucky with that at Younium. You’re surrounded by people who are really good at what they do, which grows your confidence massively, and at the same time you feel secure enough to try things and make mistakes. In my experience, that balance is not common at all.
Do you have any hobbies or passions outside of work that energize you?
The vintage business is definitely one. There are periods when I don’t have as much energy for it but more often than that it energizes me. It’s that creative side, a break from everyday life.
And then football. I’ve played my whole life, at different levels, and I still play about three times a week. I honestly can’t live without it. It’s the only place where I completely switch off. Some people have yoga; I have football as my meditation.
And of course it’s also very social. As you get older, that becomes the most important part: seeing the same people a few times a week. It’s the best.
What has helped you develop the most in your role at Younium?
I’ve had the privilege of having Johan as my mentor and manager. He’s been in this business for a long time, and it’s really inspirational to work with him. He’s helped me a lot, and from day one he’s trusted me to experiment and grow. As a small finance team, we work very closely together, and I’ve learned so much from that.
I also get to work closely with all parts of the organization, especially the product team. Younium is built for finance teams and I use it every day, so it’s been a perfect fit for me. It’s great to be part of the actual product we provide to our customers.
What’s your favorite place you’ve ever visited?
I have to say Lisbon. I lived there for six months, and it will always have a special place in my heart. It’s such a free-spirited, chill and relaxed city, and I recommend everyone go there at some point.
I could also say London, of course, and the Stockholm archipelago, where we have a country house. That’s definitely up there too. And after our kick-off, I have to mention Kraków! I’ve been there twice now, and every time I think that it’s a great city. For me, it’s underrated. But I’ll stick with Lisbon for now, until I travel somewhere else. 🌍
